‘‘Top 100 Favorite Feature Films #10-1′ (Post #45)

My transition from home to school has been a long one and I have not taken the time to update my blog even though I have had the time. It is a struggle to decide between all of my interests. So here it is my top 10.

10          Inception (2010)

The Nolan brothers never sees to amaze me. I was initially introduced to Nolan in the Batman films, but my admiration grew with the release of Inception. Inception put me in a state of mind I’ve never been before. The pure imagination needed to make this film was unbelievable. I have never seen the topic of dreams put into such a well developed and interesting movie. Inception, in my opinion was the best film of 2010. Though many would fight to say Memento is Christopher Nolan’s best film (Mind you, I myself would agree in some ways with this statement) but I believe this his most creative and mind bending. Inception is a block buster classic.

9          Tree Of Life (2011)

The most emotionally captivating film I have ever seen. A cinematic beauty. The greatest film of the year! Sadly under rated! To many peoples minds were to weak to understand how spectacular this film is. Everyone should give it a chance. This movie left me speechless. Maybe the most beautiful film I have ever seen. Reaches a level of philosophy and meaning that not even 2001 can do.

8          West Side Story (1961)

West Side Story in my opinion was sadly beat out by Music Man for the Tony for best musical when released but the film version of this musical outdid that of The Music Man. West Side Story is one of my favorite musicals I have ever performed in or had the pleasure of seeing it adapted on film. This movies is well deserving of its 10 Oscars including Best Picture.

7          It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

I was not brought up on It’s a Wonder Life for some reason or another. We had it on dvd but during the Christmas season I always watch the cartoons as a child as well as Alistair Sim’s  A Christmas Carol, White Christmas and Holiday Inn. But I can remember the first time I finally saw this film and fell deeply in love. It is everything a film should be and more. Not only is it a great Christmas film if not the best Christmas film ever made but a great time film for any time of the year.

6          Saving Private Ryan (1998)

It’s ironic that I am writing this sick with a bad cold because when I first saw Saving Private Ryan I was in the same state. Lets just put it out there and say that the opening sequence of this film almost outdoes the rest of the story. Though I believe Schindler’s List to be Spielberg’s masterpiece this movie is my favorite. I am a sucker for WWII films and this of course is my favorite. This film should have won Best Picture but sadly was beat by Shakespeare in Love (Which I love too and actually almost made this list.)

5          Vertigo (1958)

Vertigo was one of the first Hitchcock films I had ever seen and boy did it leave an impression. When I first made this list it was right around this same spot and I hadn’t even seen it since the first time I watched it about 3 years ago. After I originally made my list I decided I needed to revisit this spectacular. Now with a more educated film mind, I was even more blown away. This is Hitchcock’s masterpiece and I am happy to tell you it won over Citizen Kane in Sight and Sound Magazine for the first time in over 50 years!

4          The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Now, I originally wanted to put all The Lord of the Rings films to be in one spot but sadly knew I couldn’t do that as they are separate films. So I decided to put this film in 3td from least to greatest of the films. Many people place this as an inbetweener for the trilogy since Jackson made some interesting changes to the story but I love what he did. (But also a favorite for many) The Two Towers is a beautiful film that I will love no matter what.

3          Singin’ In the Rain (1952)

As I have stated before, I was raised on musicals. And Singin’ In The Rain plays one of the biggest rolls in my life. This film explains so many things about me. This is my all time favorite musical and would rank #1 if it weren’t for a certain trilogy. Singin’ In the Rain is the best film ever made about Hollywood. I have recently learned some interesting things about this film from the BluRay release. For instance, that most of the Good Morning number was done in one take, which is incredible because of the amount of synchronization and dancing done in this number. Some of the best film making ever done, they don’t make them like this anymore.

2          The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

I understand we film thy the academy waited until the third film to give The Lord of the Rings its Best Picture win. This is therings ev movie that brings everything together from the previous two films. The Return of the King is an amazing spectacle that deserves all 11 awards it was nominated for and won. Many favor this over the rest of the trilogy but there is still a soft spot in my heart for my number one favorite film.

1          The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

When The Fellowship of the Ring came to theaters when I was in third grade, I was unaware that it would leave such a huge impact on my life. My mom didn’t initially let me see the movie but introduced me to The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and the Return of the King animated films. It wasn’t until the summer before 4th grade she finally bought the film and let me watch it. I can remember like it was yesterday, sitting down to watch the VHS. This launched my years of obsession with the franchise. It lead me to reading the books for the first time in 4th grade as well as documenting numerous LOTR styled drawing by my friends and I. I would come home almost everyday and watch The Fellowship. (I have seen this film more than any other movie….ever!) I was in love and have really never fallen out of love for Tolkien’s Middle Earth. I believe this to be one of the greatest films ever made….Now I really want to watch this film! AWWWW!

Thank you so much for putting up for my delays and sticking with my list. It was so much fun making this list. I hope you all continue reading my reviews and enjoy more lists to come.

Grant Fitzgerald

‘‘Top 100 Favorite Feature Films #20-11′ (Post #44)

20          Toy Story 3 (2010)

I was wowed when I saw this film two winters ago. This included all the best of the previous Toy Stories and rolled them into one. This film was so moving and full of some of Pixar’s best story telling. Toy Story 3 was the ending of the best children’s trilogy of all time.

19          The Dark Knight (2008)

I hate to be stereotypical and have The Dark Knight so high on my list but…..dang it!….it is such a good film! This movie is the best of the trilogy and the best comic book movie of all time. Yes even better then The Avengers. Christopher Nolan put together a masterful story that is rich in every aspect, from the screen play to to the cinematography. Plus Heath Ledger did wonders making his joker one of the most iconic rolls of all time. Her owns the joker.

18          Dial M For Murder (1954)

Hitchcock can do no wrong. This is my second favorite of all his films. I love how he uses one set throughout the entire film. This is one of his most well put together films that twists your brain from start to finish. Plus it has Grace Kelly. MMMMMM….Grace Kelly.

17          Fight Club (1999)

Fight Club is probably David Fincher’s most famous and most Favorited film of his career. Even though this film is masterfully crafted from start to finish, of course it was the ending that made me fall most in love. After my first viewing I have been able to appreciate other aspects of the film including the incredible acting, camera work and screen play. This movie is one of the best ever made.

16          The Great Escape (1963)

Every time I watch The Great Escape I am sitting on the edge of my seat, even though I know what happens each step along the way. The Great Escape was probably my first favorite WWII film when I first started watch WWII movies. There is nothing I dislike about this movie and I love everything about it. It is one of those perfect films.

15           Spirited Away (2001)

I was in awe the first time I saw Spirited Away! It was the first Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli film I had ever seem and I was blown away. This is fantasy, story telling, art direction and animation at its best. I recommend watching this one in the original Japanese dub. I promise you will soon forge you are watching a Japanese film. Miyazaki will sweep you away with this coming of age tale. I can’t wait until this film will be released on BluRay. I have been waiting in great anticipation for not only my favorite animated film but also a film that I believe to be the best animated film ever!

14          Pulp Fiction (1994)

What can I say about you Pulpy? Lets say the first time I saw this movie I watched it two days in a row. That is a rare thing for me that does not happen often and probably hasn’t happened since and that was two years ago. This is Tarantino’s best film and one of the best written films I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. All I can say about Pulp Fiction is that you have to see it to understand it. Go in very open minded. But mind you it isn’t for the faint of heart and has some tough situations.

13          Gone With the Wind (1939)

When I first started getting into films I didn’t know what the best was. All I knew was that Gone With the Wind has been ranked near the top for years. The first time I saw this was in elementary, though I didn’t remember much I did remember the scene were Scarlet goes to fin a doctor and the camera cranes out to reveal the mass of wounded and dead soldiers. That shot is one that has stayed in my mind since then.

12          Casablanca (1942)

I didn’t like Casablanca the first time I saw it. Well at least wasn’t too impressed. But the second viewing totally changed my opinion, which is why I rank it at No. 12. This film is probably the most nostalgic film I have ever seen. What for its music, script, story, acting and all those quotes. Casablanca is a true classic and one of the top 10 films ever made.

11          Sunset Blvd. (1950)

I don’t think one film can make one young film lover wish he lived in 1950s or late 40s as much as this man. It just makes me ache thinking about how good this movie is. This film is one of the best ever made about Hollywood. I loved this film after my first viewing. I was blown away! I recently revisited it for the 2nd time at the beginning of the summer when I started this list and while watching was blown away again. The tale is truly fascinating of a washed-up silent film actress who has no life if it weren’t for film. She becomes entranced with the dream of having a come black on the silver-screen once more. What I find truly fascinating is the actress playing Norma Desmond, Gloria Swanson once was a silent film actress whose career survived the switch to sound. It’s such a great story that shouldn’t be missed by any film lover.

‘‘Top 100 Favorite Feature Films #30-21′ (Post #41)

to So this WordPress decided to log out on me when I published this post.

30          12 Angry Men (1957)

The first time I ever experienced this story was a community theater production. Throughout the show I played detective, so to speak, and tried to figure out the case. After the production I really wanted to see the movie and loved it. 12 Angry Men is a cinematic treat! The story is told with some superb actors and some great visual moments. This movie is one of the best court room dramas (or jury room drama) of all time.

29              Psycho (1960)

Psycho is probably the scariest thriller/horror film I have ever seen. Hitchcock pushed the envelope to make this film and came out with a masterpiece. Though I have only seen this film once, it earned a high spot on my list of favorites. Every shot has been was put together in such a precise manor that I cannot even think of the man hours spent planning this film. This film is near perfection.

28          Holiday Inn (1942)

Holiday Inn is my favorite Christmas movie musical ever made. Had it not been on this list Holiday Inn surely would have taken its place. Irving Berlin put together a truly beautiful and cheerful film. White Christmas was put onto film for the first time in this movie and it gets me every time Bing Crosby whistles and steps through the doorway near the end of the film. I love this film I could not go a more than a year without watching it.

27          The Princess Bride (1987)

This movie is probably one of the most quoted movies of all time. I don’t think I have ever met anyone who does not love Princess Bride. It is one of those films that has something for everyone; action, adventure, comedy, duels, magic, true love. In my opinion this is one of the best film ever made. A film that is both entertaining  fabulously made.

26          Citizen Kane(1941)/ Wizard of Oz (1939)

I cheated for this one because throughout the process of making this list The Wizard of  Oz somehow made it off my list. I coudln’t remove anything so I just put it here with Citizen Kane.

Citizen Kane has ruled the no. 1 spot on Sight & Sound Magazines top 100 film of all time for at least 50 years, but this week it was surpassed by Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Immediately after seeing this film I saw why it has been held on such a high pillar in the film making world. Orson Welles put together a film that stands out in every aspect of film, including such criteria as acting, cinematic visuals and story. This was his masterpiece but was sadly under looked for a number of years. The Academy didn’t like Welles, so it lost to How Green Was My Valley. Citizen Kane is the perfect film.

The Wizard of Oz may be the most magical film ever made. This piece of cinema history has with stood the test of time because of its appeal to all audience. This film gives us something we rarely see in films, that movies are magic. I recently learned that Somewhere Over the Rainbow was almost scrapped for the final cut. It blew my mind to believe that the most popular song in movie history was almost wasn’t. The Wizard of Oz is the greatest fantasy film of all time!

25          Hugo (2011)

I was sad that i was not able to view this in theaters and in what was supposed to be one of the best 3D films ever made. I couldn’t wait for the film to come out on BluRay and grabbed it at its midnight release. Both The Artist and Hugo were movies about movies and I fell in love with Hugo’s story. I am a film history buff (when I say buff I mean it is one of my greatest interests, I am in the midst of learning all I can) and the story of George Méliés was just what a fan like me was looking for. This film was absolutely stunning. Beautiful visuals and a beautiful story. In my opinion it deserved the Best Picture win over The Artist (though I loved The Artist and I am glad it won for its own reasons).

24          Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Moulin Rouge! is one of the best movie musical ever made. I don’t think any other musical soundtrack has captivated me as much as this film’s. Baz Luhrmann is a stunning director who crafted a beautiful and creative movie experience. One can tell he has a great love of art and beauty. Let’s just say I am very excited for his latest film The Great Gatsby to come out.

23          One Hundred and One Dalmations (1961)

My mom use to tell me I would watch this film over and over day after day. as I would watch it I would toss the VHS box into the air. it would hit the ceiling, fall to the ground and I would pick it up and do it again and again and again. The animation used throughout is some of the most beautiful and creative I have ever seen. I will be first in line when this finally comes out on BluRay 101 Dalmatians is just a beautiful story full of adventure and cute puppies. The animation used throughout is some of the most beautiful and creative I have ever seen. It will be near the top of my list for all time!

22          Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

Even thorough The Deathly Hallow film are great, I still don’t think they stand up to the near perfect book to movie adaption of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. This film has stuck out to me ever since I first saw it. Even if you weren’t a fan of the books or film adaption you can’t deny that this film is really well crafted. This story is my favorite of the series and it is near and dear to my heart. Now I need to go watch it because I love watching this movie.

21          Sleeping Beauty (1959)

The film is so gorgeous. Some of the best artistic work went into this film. This film in my opinion is the best princess movie of all time told along with Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous suit. Sleeping Beauty had some of the best animation I have ever seen in a film and it gives me chills, especially on the BluRay release. This film not only includes my favorite princess but also my favorite prince. I have the utmost respect for the time put into making Sleeping Beauty.

‘‘Top 100 Favorite Feature Films #40-31′ (Post #39)

40          Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

One of most visually stunning and captivating tales I have ever beheld on film. Pan’s Labyrinth became an instant favorite and I needed to own it as soon as possible after I finally acquired a BluRay player. This a fantastic, chilling and altogether enormously satisfying fantasy tale. This film is truly tragic at times but this tragic tale is made up by its redeeming story. This film nearly killed the director Guillermo del Toro, he lost 40 pounds making this film. He put his heart and soul into this film. His masterpiece!

39          The Adventure of Robin Hood (1938)

I loved the story of Robin Hood while growing up. It was first introduced to me by Dinsey’s Robin Hood and I fell in love with the most famous archer of all time. The Adventures of Robin Hood is the best Robin Hood film ever made. In my opinion it has no competition. Errol Flynn provides us with the best depiction of the outlaw ever put on film. I love this movie and always will.

Here is a trailer I put together for a film class of this film:

38         Metropolis (1927)

Metropolis is the best Sci-Fi film I have ever seen. Though I have on viewed it once it left a lasting impression. I was utterly stunned by how huge this production was. This movie was definitely ahead of its time and in my opinion it has never been surpassed by any other science fiction film. This iconic film is an absolute masterpiece.

37          The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

All I remember about this movie from when I first saw it was a guy tunneling out of a jail. And I thought it super cool. This is one of my dads favorite movies and he used to watch it on TV all the time. But it wasn’t until about 3 years ago I finally saw this film all the way through. The Shawshank Redemption has been ranked in the top 10 favorite films of all time been many user voted sites. It has been the highest rated film on IMDBs for years. The acting and story are superb throughout. I can see why it has been loved by so many.

36          Rear Window (1954)

I was absolutely blown away after watching this for the first time in three years. Man has my knowledge and understanding of film grown. The first time I watched this I love it but was not blown away like I was with other Hitchcock films. Rear Window was one of the most visually entertaining and unique films I have ever seen. This film is a masterpiece and there is nothing I don’t love about it. Especially Grace Kelly, I think I was going to die every time she came on screen. The performances, script and cinematography were spellbinding. This may be most fans favorite Hitchcock film, but I still have 3 more ranked above this.

35         Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

So some may put there noses up to my 34th favorite film. Sure many may think this movie is good, but for me it is an absolute favorite. In my opinion, this movie is the best live action Disney film ever made (accept maybe Mary Poppins). Pirates brought me to a magical and fantastic world of swashbuckling pirates. They don’t make films like this anymore but Disney stepped up to the challenge and came out with a beautiful product. A staple of my late childhood.

34          Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939)

I am pretty sure James Stewart is my favorite actor of all time. I have loved every film I’ve ever seen him in and in each one he does fabulous work. Mr. Smith Goes To Washington became an instant favorite when I saw it. I was drawn to the story, the acting, the comedy and the lesson. This is one I definitely need to see again. One of the best films ever made.

33          The Kid (1921)

The Kid is my favorite silent film. Not only was this movie one of the funniest I have ever seen but also one of the most precious.  Though Chaplin wanted to be known for The Gold Rush (Another of my favorites) I believe this is his best (Of what I have seen that is). This story is beautiful, heartwarming and simply a masterpiece. Please Criterion release this on BluRay.

32          The Prestige (2006)

Every time I watch this film I am left speechless. Nolan put together a film that is baffling and beautiful from start to finish. I can’t believe this film was so underrated. One of the bets I have ever seen and I never heard of it when it came out. The Prestige tells the story of to dueling magicians who used to be friends until one day when Hugh Jackman’s wife in the film drowns during a performance on stage. Jackman’s character blames his partner played by Christain Bale and they soon become adversaries on and off the stage. This is a masterful film that concludes with one of the best surprise endings ever shown on film.

31         Memento (2000)

Christopher Nolan has become one of the world’s favorite directors in recent years. In my opinion he is becoming the new Hitchcock with his original ideas and storytelling. Before there was The Batman Trilogy or Inception there was Memento. This film is every low budget directors dream. The screenplay is one of the best I have ever seen. A story that is told backwards and forwards at the same time. You just have to see it to understand. Many may say this is his masterpiece but I still have three films by the same director that rank higher on my list. This thriller is one of a kind.

‘‘Top 100 Favorite Feature Films #50-41′ (Post #36)

It has been way too long since I updated this! Sorry, I just don’t have enough time these days and each one of these posts takes a while to write make since I am a perfectionist with the layout. Also thinking of what to say sometimes can take a bit of time.

50          The Matrix (1999)

I cannot believe I have only seen this film once. I was so blown away when I saw this film and can’t remember allot of it. I think it is time I revisit this movie. The Matrix appealed to me in so many ways. I found the plot fascinating, along with the correlation between the characters and the Bible. The Wachowski Brothers did great work in this film and I chose it over including their film V For Vendetta, which is marvelous in its own right. Definitely need to buy this on BluRay and re-watch.

49          Batman Begins (2005)

It has been years since I have seen this film, that is until last week when I thought I should watch before writing about it. I remember the first time I watched this and I didn’t really understand it, not until my family got the DVD and I watched it over and over. I loved how Christopher Nolan brought the Batman franchise to a new level of story telling. After watching it again I realize it doesn’t quite live up to The Dark Knight which I have watch much more frequently recently, but it still holds its own as one of my favorite films.

48         The Usual Suspects (1995)

So it wasn’t until the second time I saw this that I was so blown away. I think the first time I was distracted or something, because I didn’t catch the ending and boy is it one of the best endings I have ever seen on film. The Usual Suspectsis a thrilling and at times hilarious film that was superbly written and acted. Kevin Spacey is magnificent in his roll as Verbal. If you haven’t seen this, do yourself a favor and watch this incredible masterpiece.

47          Coraline (2009)

Man, I can’t think of many movies that I loved more and more after each viewing and I have seen Coraline many times. The animation, story and voice acting is incredible and I am so glad they made this film. One of the things I love most about this movie is its score. I have the soundtrack and it has been a favorite since the first time I saw the film. I just love this animate film!

46          Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (1958)

I love the Golden Age of cinema! They created many of my all-time favorite and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is no exception. So I have only seen this once but boy did it leave an impression. As a film production major I am very interested in following the actin route and I don’t thing any performance as inspired me more than Paul Newman in his roll as Brick Pollit. I love play to movie adaptions, mostly because of my background in theater. I need to watch this movie many more times and maybe after a 100 views I will be able to act as good as the great Paul Newman.

Just saw Cool Hand Luke for the first time and was outstanding by the film itself and Newsman’s roll.

45          The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

“What the Cuss?!?” AHHHHHH! This movie is not only the best animated film of 2009 (Sorry Up) but also one of the best films of 2009! I loved it and adored its everything about this film in my first sitting. But I have grown to like it more and more each time. My favorite viewing was with a group of 10 or more at Thanksgiving last year. I had never viewed it with such a large audience and there laughter just made me love this film more and more deeply. Just writing about this film as made me put in my headphones and listen to its superb soundtrack!

44          Fantasia (1940)

Though I always love The Sorceror’s Apprentice, The Dance of the Hours, The Pastoral Symphony and The Nutcracker Sweet it wasn’t until I was older that I deeply appreciated Fantasia’s artistic value. This was Walt Disney’s experiment and his pride. This film not only has not only one of the best soundtracks of a all time but some of the best animation ever. The idea behind this film is just fascinating and it is something that should be cherished for all time

43          Amélie

What a film! I forgot so much about it until I watched it again two weeks ago. (I am learning I need to watch movies more then once). I don’t know what it is about the French but they make some darn good films. Amelie is sweet, original and just plain beautiful. There are so many things I love about this film that i can’t fit them all into this brief description. All I can do is suggest you watch this movie and take in this masterpiece of film making.

42          Toy Story (1995)

The Original Toy Story was the first time every child’s dream came to life, the first time toys came to life. This is definitely one of the best children’s films of all time. Pixar decided to raise the bar on their first feature. The voice talents of Tim Allen and Tom Hanks made for some memorable characters. I have the utmost respect for Pixar in making the first ever CGI film! There is nothing not to love about this film! A film that can help to define my childhood.

41          To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)

I read To Kill A Mockingbird in high-school and was entranced by its wonderful story. The film is not only one of the best book to movie adaptions of all time but one of the best films ever made. Gregory Peck won me over as Atticus Finch, the #1 dad of all time. One of the best court room genre films to date. It is truly an exhilarating film. I have much respect for the beautiful screenplay adaption. A masterpiece!

‘Top 100 Favorite Feature Films #60-51′ (Post #29)

60          The Sandlot 1993)

I can still remember the first time I ever saw The Sandlot, it was back in 2nd or 3rd grade and I remember the adult Smalls walking through the hallways of the baseball stadium on his way to his job as baseball announcer. I was intrigued from the start and had no idea that this baseball movie would become one of my favorite movies to view while growing up. I never grew up around many friends from school because they lived to far around town or in a different town that we never hung out in groups like they did in The Sandlot. This movie made me love being a kid and envy what growing up was like in the 60s. Some of my favorite scenes include the Fireworks game and the carnival night. This movie is just tons of fun.

59          Titanic (1997)

It wasn’t until May of 2012 that I finally got to see this movie from start to finish. I originally saw it when in 6th grade on TV from the point of the sinking to the end and I thought it was the most thrilling thing I had ever seen. From then on I had seen the equivalent of the whole film but not all the way through. But when it was announced that Titanic was to be released in theaters in 3D I decided I would go and finally see it. And even though the 3D wasn’t the best I loved seeing it in theaters and in my opinion I feel that Titanic is one of the top 100 films of all time. Cameron’s masterpiece.

58          The Gold Rush (1925)

This wasn’t on my list until a week ago when I did some more revising and knew I had to include this film. Hands down The Gold Rush is one of the funniest and most clever films I have ever seen.  This is the film that Charlie Chaplin wanted to be known for and rightly so, in my opinion. I nearly busted a gut during the part of the film where he does his famous roll dance. The Gold Rush is a beautiful picture that was made with heart and a love for cinema.

57          Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is probably the most popular and most well known of all of John Hughes’ films.  This movie is a landmark 80s films and has been quoted, viewed and loved by millions.  This movie is full of laugh out loud moments that will be remembered for years and years to come. I feel a little bad for Matthew Broderick as he really never grew out of this iconic role and has been known as Ferris ever since. If you have never seen this hysterical comedy, make it a must see.

56          Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

This was the first Indiana Jones film I had ever seen and it has always been my favorite. Though Raiders is usually picked over this, I have always found this one more adventurous and appealing. I remember when I first found this VHS in my parent’s collection and brought it out for a viewing. I absolutely loved the adventure especially that of the final scenes when Indi must get passed the obstacles to find the Holy Grail. One of my all-time favorite adventures!

55          How To Train Your Dragon (2010)

“That was so good,” is what I said as I walked out of the theater. How to Train your Dragon in my opinion is Dreamworks best film. I found that they finally reached Pixar with this movie. But it wasn’t until the second viewing that I realized I loved this film so much. I am a sucker for acting and dialogue so I loved how each voice actor found there character so well to produce a sarcastic and fantastic film. A must see for all those animation lovers.

54          Aladdin (1992)

Aladdin includes one of the coolest animated protagonists ever, number of Disney’s most memorable songs including probably the most popular/favorite Disney song of all time A Whole New World. Aladdin is one of those films that every young boy should watch as a child as the main protagonist is not a princess. Even though I love my share of princess films, I just have to say there is nothing cooler the a street urchin, free running, love struck hero!

53          Seven Samurai

Seven Samurai is a film that was made to westernize Japanese filmmaking and boy, did they do a great job. I watched this movie in my film history class and was entranced by how well this film was made and how captivating the stories and characters were. Plus the action will keep those adrenaline lovers interested throughout. Seven Samurai influenced movies such as The Magnificent Seven, A Bug’s Life and 13 Assasins. A standard for film lovers.

52          The Artist (2011)

I am a little surprised myself that this movie made it so high on my list but The Artist is one of the most important movies in recent film history. Not only did this film win some major awards such as the ever-coveted Best Picture, but it re-established and showed us that silent films can still be made. I really hope that silent films will pick up again. I thought this a beautiful film that will only grow nearer and dearer to me.

51           Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)

The Deathly Hallows Part 2 may possibly be the best Harry Potter instillation adapted to film. In my opinion this was one of the best films of the year only one of my personal favorites. This movie gave a Harry Potter movie series an epic and near perfect conclusion. The Harry Potter series will always be in my heart as one of my favorite franchises. The Deathly Hallows Part 2 was emotional and visually stunning. I was most satisfied by this final tale. I thought about putting Part 1 in this list also but this one tops it and I couldn’t put them both in.

‘Top 100 Favorite Feature Films #70-61′ (Post #25)

Sorry it has taken me so long to post. I started my job unexpectedly sooner then I thought I would and I work form 4:00am- 3:30pm and the last two weeks I have had a show every night but this week I don’t have rehearsal or shows until Thursday. Anyways enjoy the list my tens of readers.

70          American History X (1998)

One of those films that just impacts you while at the same time leaving you utterly disgusted. Disgusted with the wrongs and evils of the world that is, though the film the images itself could leave you a little grossed out. Edward Norton does some outstanding work in this heart and gut wrenching plot. This is a movie that we all can learn from. Some very impacting stuff here.

69          Avatar (2009)

So this seemed to be everyone’s favorite movie of 2009 (well accept for the film majors at my school). Both The Hurt Locker and Avatar had their significant important factors but I enjoyed and have enjoyed Avatar many times since I originally saw it in glorious Imax 3D. Many can say that this is the best film of the year but is only beat out for me by #68 and two fabulous animated films. Those many of my fellow film lovers loath James Cameron and Avatar,  I can’t help admire how beautiful this movie is. This film has some of the best CGI and most breathtaking shots I have ever seen. Avatar story is not the most original but it adapts a story that has been told beautifully multiple times in film like Dances With Wolves, Pocahontas and The Last Samurai. Anyways screw all you haters Avatar is great.

68          The Fighter (2010)

The reason that The Fighter and Black Swan (#68 and #67) surpassed The King’s Speech and The Social Network is because they left a larger effect after my first viewing. I have seen both The King’s Speech and The Social Network multiple times and after these revisiting I have gained to love them more then the first viewings. But with The Fighter and Black Swan I was blown away the first time with both these films. Though I still think The Social Network and The King’s Speech are more deserving of the Best Picture title I found The Fighter absolutely phenomenal with just one viewing. Christian Bale did excellent work in this film (Though sometimes I wonder how he stays healthy dropping and gaining weight so much for his films) anyways…while the rest of the cast had no trouble keeping up with his great performance. This is the best movie about a boxer I have ever seen.

67          Black Swan (2010)

Continuing about what I said above with The Fighter, I was absolutely stunned by how much I loved this film. his psychological theater had me engrossed throughout the whole glorious film.  Besides the superb performance by Natalie Portman and her co-stars and the engrossing storyline, I loved how this movie was shot. It was filmed on 16mm films which is cheaper to shoot and develop then 35mm, besides 16mm it was shot on both Canon 7D and 5D which are both products that can be bought by the regular consumer and I use at film school. If you want to

66          Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Quentin Tarantino does it again in the most interesting WWII film I have ever seen. Inglorious Basterds starts off with a bang during its opening sequence.  Movie’s opening scene almost surpasses the rest of the whole entire film. The acting and screenplay is what carries this film to being one of Tarantino’s best. The cast/acting is near perfection in this dark comedy. This film is a laugh out loud and gut wrenching all at the same time. My mind was blown when I first saw this. I have never seen anything like this film before. Spectacular!

65          A Christmas Story (1983)

Part of me never wants to buy this movie because I have enjoyed watching it on TBS and onlyTBS almost every Christmas. This film may just be the best Christmas movie ever made. There is nothing not to love about this movie. It gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling, it makes me laugh at its hilarious hijinks during the funny tales of Ralphie’s past Christmas memories. No matter how matter how many times you watch it Christmas Eve or day, it never gets old.

64         Up (2009)

Up is one of the most heartfelt films I have ever scene. The opening montage scene was one of the best scenes of the year and one of the most emotional. Though it is a tear jerk-er Up is full of laughs (Talking Dogs, A Bird Named Kevin, A Chubby Boyscout). This is one of the cutest movies with some of the best story telling ever used by Pixar. This film has grown on me with each viewing and there will be many more to come.

63          Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lecter) had only just over 16 minutes of screen time and had one of the most memorable rolls in screen history. This movie probably is the creepiest film I have ever seen. Such a good film in every way. One of the most exciting thrillers I have ever seen. I don’t know what else to say but this movie made a lasting impression.

62          It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad  World(1963)

So fricken funny in every way! This movie is over the top and totally slapstick and crazy (Just like this sentence). After my first and only full viewing this film it became an instant favorite. I watched this with a my group of friends who are as crazy as the characters in this movie. The movie start off with a bang when a man is speeding down a highway and races his car over a cliff (I laughed so hard). The cast of Mad Mad Mad Mad World goes on a wild goose chase for the money of the the recently departed driver (who literally kicks the bucket). Some of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen on film happen in this movie including my personal favorite part when one character tears down a whole entire gas station. You have to see this movie if you like to laugh.

61          Wall-E (2008)

I loved Wall-E ever since my first viewing of the film and even after numerous viewings I have still not grown tired of the little robot. Wall-E is a Pixar masterpiece that deals with some of the planets largest issues. Some may take this as a political piece, but I tend to ignore that side and look at its artistic brilliance. No one can say they don’t love this little cleaning robot for he is one of the cutest animated characters ever. The story is a a fascinating one that is made even more spectacular by its gorgeous animation. A must see!

‘Top 100 Favorite Feature Films #80-71′ (Post #21)

80          Cinderella Man (2005)

Not that this film was badly rated but I believe it is one of the most under rated films I have ever seen. I remember when it came out and they portrayed it as a boxing movie on TV spots and I wasn’t overly interested. One day I finally was able to watch it and was awestruck about how great this film was. Cinderella Man takes place during the great depression and is the story of a champion boxer who has fell out of the limelight. Russell Crowe does fabulous as the strong father and husband who must over come economic struggles to help feed and furnish his family. Cinderella Man is outstanding.

79         Master and Commander: Far Side of the World (2003)

I didn’t mean to put two Russell Crowe films in a row, it just turned out that way. If The Return of the King didn’t get Best Picture in 2004 this film should have one. This an absolutely gorgeous film with superb cinematography and a steady plot with interesting and impaction subplots. This is  a beaut!

78          Home Alone (1990)

Don’t judge me! This is my list! This has always been a favorite film to watch not only during Christmas but all year round. It is a fun filled story that I was all was captivated by as a kid. Of course my favorite parts were during Kevin’s booby trapped house fight against the burgers Marve and Harry. This movie has a special place in my heart.

77          The Secret of NIMH (1982)

I remember seeing previews for this movie when I was younger, but never got a chance to see it until a few months ago I finally dived into the fantastic animated film, The Secret of NIMH.This story has a great sense of mystery, magic, thrill and wonder. After watching this film I wanted to watch it again. So beautiful and dark! So I still haven’t gotten to it again but I have so many films on my to watch list.

76          Forrest Gump (1994)

One of the most quoted movies of all time for a good reason. Forrest is one of the most loved characters of all time. I had seen this film in bits and pieces quiet often but it wasn’t until last year I finally watched the whole film through and I love it! So many memorable scenes. Tom Hanks at his best.

75          Schindler’s List (1993)

Spielberg’s masterpiece? Maybe. This is definitely one of the most important stories that has ever been told in film. The Holocaust was devastating and I found that Spielberg captured this horrible time with an excellent and heart felt portrayal. I have only seen it once but maybe once in every few years is enough. This movie leaves me speechless.

74          The Social Network (2010)

Like The King’s Speech this isn’t my favorite film of 2010 but I love it dearly. I have already seen it three times which is allot for me but I still can’t get enough of it. Every so often I get a great urge to see this film. I need to buy this on BluRay soon. David Fincher’s traditional dark cinematic style is used throughout but many situations are made light upon by some excellent dialogue. I deserves its Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

73          The Bridge On the River Kwai (1957)

Just finished watching this for the first time since I originally saw it, probably 3 years ago. Anyways this film deserves its numerous Academy wins. The Bridge On the River Kwai is another wonderful films from the Golden Age of Films (The 1950s). Bridge is a fascinating cinematic feet mostly film on location with gorgeous sets and real to life situation. This is one of the best WWII pictures ever made and runs fluidly from start to finish with help from its memorable cast and loveable characters. I found myself really admiring Col. Nicholson (Alec Guiness). If any cinephiles out there haven’t seen The Bridge On the River Kwai, get to it!

72          Breathless (1960)

French New-Wave is fabulous. This is the first film that invited me into its fabulous art style. A good way for me to describe this film is by saying it was a breath of fresh air. But in all seriousness this was one of the most beautiful and free films I have ever seen. The leading lady Jean Seberg was one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. The acting in this film was superb and I fell deeply in love with it. Soon after watching Breathless I revisited Bonnie and Clyde in my Film History class and it gave me an even deeper appreciation to both films. I applaud this films originality.

71          Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Beauty and the Beast is one of the best animated films ever made and helped replace the magically glory that is Disney. It was always a loved film when I was a kid and still remains to this day just as vivid and alive with color and music. Beauty and the Beast lead to an excellent Broadway musical that i have had the pleasure to perform in. Disney did great things with this film, a land mark, a beauty.

‘Top 100 Favorite Feature Films #90-81′ (Post #20)

As I have been blogging my list I have been constantly changing my list. I am also watching movies on my list that I haven’t seen in a long time to refresh my memory of them.  I am watching #90 The Longest Day as we write. Remembering Memorial Day!

90          The Longest Day (1962)

The Longest Day has always been one of my favorite WWII films. With an almost three hour clocking time, this movie is filled with quick passed story lines. I love how we see so many stories and plots throughout this film. My favorite part is during the night time paratrooper drops into France Pvt. Dutch Schultz  played by Richard Beymer of West Side Story fame and a number of allied men walk right passed a group of German soldiers in the pitch black night. It isn’t until after that he realizes they were German. Though one would think there could be much comedy in a WWII film this movie is full of it; A dog, A Bagpiper, A Frenchman on a bicycle all on the Normandy beaches. A fantastic Epic! Plus the Germans actually speak German and the French speak French!

89          The Fall (2006)

This film was made over a period of four years and boy was it worth it! This film is made up of some of the most beautiful landscapes and some of the most captivating establishing shots I have ever seen. This film is a heartfelt fantasy that many will enjoy. This movie is a rare beauty for this age of film making. The Fall is a film for all those who appreciate the beauty in art.

88          The King’s Speech (2010)

The Best Picture of 2011 and rightly so. Though it wasn’t my favorite film of the year it definitely deserves this prestigious award. Besides the acting my favorite thing about this film is its cinematography.  One can tell that every shot was choreographed and compiled with expert precision. This is a beautiful film that tells a very important story. The greatest period piece of modern cinema.

87          Cinema Paradiso (1988)

One of my favorite type of movies are movies about film and the effect cinema has on peoples lives! Cinema Paradiso is a fabulous film about a young Italian boy and how he grew up with movies! It is a passionate film that portrays the importance of film in peoples every day lives. This is a sweet movie that is for all those people out there, like me, who have a strong passion for film.

86           Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

“Rain Drops keep falling on my head…” Fricken loved this movie after my first viewing. I am watching it again because it has been a almost two years since I first saw it. This movie was a really fun ride with some superb acting by Paul Newman and Robert Redford. My favorite western for sure, with True Grit (2010) as a close second.

85         All Quiet On the Western Front (1930)

Besides Warhorse, All Quiet On the Western Front is the only WWI movie I have ever seen. This film takes the interesting position of the German side of the war, though of all the acting is done by American actors. All Quiet is a phenomenal picture. The story was very intriguing and gut wrenching throughout. I felt that the film makers took a very open view on the war that not one side was worse then the other. The most moving and remember-able is when the main character mortally wounds a French soldier in a shelled out whole in the ground but weeps and fights for that young soldiers life. All Quiet On the Western Front is remarkable.

84          Good Will Hunting (1997)

Good Will Hunting is a perfectly crafted film that is filled with top notch acting, story and dialogue. This is a truly moving picture that uses its characters as its structure. This is a film that wowed me after its completion. In my opinion this is  Matt Damon’s best role. This is one of those films that show you how great humanity truly is.

83          Finding Neverland (2004)

I originally saw this when it first came out but I was a young adolescent that didn’t know anything about movies but almost two years ago I revisited this film and I was captivated by how magical this film was. The power of love and family is portrait expertly in this film. This story is about the author ofPeter Pan(a novel I have regretfully never read) and his experience with a family and a young boy that inspired his writing. Finding Neverland is nothing short of a masterpiece. Plus it has one of the most beautiful scores I have ever heard.

82          The Lion King (1994)

I don’t see how I could not include this classic animated film. What a great movie made during Disney’s second Golden Age. I have always loved everything from the music to the bright animation. Much love to this near perfect animated classic.

81          Sherlock Holmes (2009)

So it may not be the most accurate Holmes ever constructed but it truly has great heart. This brain of the great Sherlock Holmes enchanted me, I was awed by the genius writing for this movie. I have become a big RDJ fan after seeing this movie. I love how he attacks his dialogue. I see a true artistic liscense in his work! Sherlock Holmes is a great mystery full of charming and witty plot points. I enjoyed this movie so much that I revisit is frequently, each time with just as much vigor.

‘Top 100 Favorite Feature Films #100-91’ (Post #19)

Making a list of my 100 favorite films was quite a task. I found it easiest to start from one and work my way up. The first 20 were easy but soon it became increasingly difficult. I used website such as Flickchart and IMDB to help me along the way since Flickchart already makes this list (though mine is very inaccurate and I have rated every movie I have seen in the last 3 years or so on IMDB. Anyways I feel pretty good about this list though at times it can be a bit inaccurate.

First I’d like to start off and list some films that didn’t quite make it on my top 100. These films include (500) Days of Summer, Across the Universe, Alien, Aliens, Anatomy of a Murder, Back to the Future, Big Fish, Bonnie and Clyde, Breakfast at Tiffani’s, Bridesmaids, Catch Me If You Can, Crash, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Dances With Wolves, Die Hard, Donnie Darko, Dr. Stranglelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Duck Soup, Easy A, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Finding Nemo, Gladiator, Goodfellas, Gran Torino, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Howl’s Moving Castle,  I Am Legend, Juno, Life is Beautiful, Midnight In Paris, Misery, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, My Week With Marylin, National Treasure, North By Northwest, O’ Brother, Where Art Though?, On the Waterfront, Planet of the Apes, Ponyo, Princess Mononoke, Rebel Without A Cause, Road to Perdition, Shakespeare In Love, Shaun of the Dead, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Stalag 17, Taxi Driver, The Breakfast Club, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Deer Hunter, The Departed, The Dirty Dozen, The Fugitive, The Gold Rush, The Hurt Locker, The Hustler, The Last Samurai, The Man With the Golden Arm, The Night of the Hunter, The Notebook, The Outsiders, The Passion of the Christ, The Public Enemy, The Pursuit of Happiness, The Shining, The Terminal, The Warriors, There Will Be Blood, To Catch a Thief, Toy Story 2, True Grit, White Christmas.

I know many of you may be appalled that I didn’t include some of these. but every film in my top 100 has an extra special place in my heart. Again, remember that these aren’t the best films of all time, because many of them would not make many top 100 best film lists. Also these are all Feature films so it will not including shorts. I will be making ten installments of ten over the next 10 days or less. Enjoy! Feedback is welcome.

100          The Notebook (2004)

Though I like quite a few films not on this list better then this movie I thought I would add it because it is my favorite modern Romantic Drama. Though Nicholas Sparks novels are sometimes related to MadLibs as in they are fill in the blank with very similar stories in some way, I really love this story. I love both Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in this film. They make a beautiful couple and tell a great love story. By no means is this one of the best movies of all time but it is a favorite. Who says men can’t love romances? I’m a film lover and I love all genres! Though it can’t compete with 500 Days of Summer as the best modern Romantic comedy, it still has a special place in my heart.

99          Man On Wire (2008)

Though I have not seen many documentaries, I thought important to include at least one. I decided to choose Man on Wire which is not only a superb film, but the best documentary I’ve ever seen. I have only seen this film once but it has left a lasting impression. This film is compiled with actual footage, interviews and reenactments. This movie documentary follows the story of tightrope walker Philippe Petit’s daring, but illegal, high-wire routine performed between New York City’s World Trade Center’s twin towers in 1974. It is a fascinating film that I was utterly awed and inspired me. See it!

98          Battleship Potemkin (1925)

I feel honored that the first time I watch this movie was on Super 8mm. This film was outstanding. Having recently read on Sergei Eisenstein I appreciated this film even more. His theory of montage is used superbly in this film. I found myself absolutely engrossed by this revolutionary film. This is a must see for all filmmakers and film lovers.

97          Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

I can remember Sunday afternoons, sitting with my dad in our living room watching movies on TV such as Terminator, Die Hard and my favorite Terminator 2. I always loved this movie and after a recent revisit over Christmas I was once again immersed into this fabulous James Cameron film. Everything about this film has always been absolutely enjoyable to me, great story, great CGI and visuals!T2is one of the best sequels of all time and in my opinion far out does its predecessor. A film and sci-fi treasure.

96          A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)

This film has some of the strongest acting and one of the most memorable screenplays I have ever seen. This movie is just full of passion, love and hate. Three things that make a wonderful film! Even though I find myself thinking about this movie often and I find the need to revisit this glorious film after 2 years of absence. A gripping film from my favorite era of film making!

95          Newsies (1992)

So it isn’t the best movie musical ever made, but I fell in love with it ago years ago.Newsieshas remained a cult classic for both children of the 90s and those musical lovers out there. It really isn’t the most spectacular film and was a box-office flop, but it’s music and choreography has always been a favorite. And finally after long last it has finally come to stage! Carry the Banner!

94           Bicycle Thieves (1948)

The saddest and most unfortunate movie I’ve ever seen. I was struck by this glorious Italian film. This is one of those films that you you ache throughout the entire story until its famous ending. All I can really say is that this film is BEAUTIFUL! Just BEAUTIFUL!

93          The Bourne Identity (2oo2)

The Bourne Identity was our first step into the world of Jason Bourne and I found it absolutely captivating. There was a toss up for me between Identity and Ultimatum but I decided on the first as it was the first to capture my interest. What makes this film for me is Bournes intelligence. Full of fascinating ideas and a crazy conspiracy this is one of my favorite action films.

92          King Kong (2005)

Oh Peter Jackson worked wonders in this film. His influence from King Kong (1933) was great but nothing stops Jackson’s creative license. In many ways I feel that he improved on the story. I loved what he did with the relationship between Kong and Anne. It was absolutely beautiful and I never saw Kong as a monster. A beautiful epic that I need to revisit soon.

91          Beginners (2010)

Soundtrack.Christopher Plummer.Story.Ewan McGregor.Mélanie Laurent.

This films was so moving and absolutely touching. I loved every minute of this film. Its independent films like this that make me so excited and inspired to be a film maker.
